Palm Sunday: Welcoming the King into Our Hearts

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week—a sacred time not merely to remember what Jesus went through, but to enter into it. It is an invitation to walk with Him, to experience His journey, and to allow that journey to transform our own lives.

As we reflect on this day, we are called to look deeper into who Jesus truly is—not only as the triumphant King entering Jerusalem, but as the suffering servant who chose the path of humility, sacrifice, and love.

More Than a Memory—A Living Experience

Palm Sunday is not just a historical commemoration. It is a spiritual re-enactment. We are invited to relive the events leading to Easter, allowing them to shape our hearts and renew our faith. This week is an opportunity to grow in our Christian life by entering the experiences of Christ Himself.

The Heart of Christ: Five Transforming Attitudes

Drawing from the reflection of St. Paul, Fr David explains during his homily five profound attitudes that define Jesus’ journey—attitudes we are invited to embrace in our own lives:

1. Becoming Fully Human

Jesus did not cling to His divine privilege. Instead, He chose to become fully human, embracing fear, weakness, and vulnerability. He understands our struggles because He lived them.

2. Self-Emptying

He “emptied Himself,” letting go of power, status, and recognition. This radical surrender teaches us to release our need for control and pride, making space for God to work within us.

3. Servanthood

Jesus became a servant—allowing Himself to be misunderstood, rejected, and even mistreated. He chose love over control, humility over dominance.

4. Humility

He humbled Himself completely, even to the point of death on the cross. There was no retaliation, no resistance—only quiet surrender and trust.

5. Obedience

In perfect obedience to the Father, Jesus accepted suffering. His obedience was not passive, but deeply active—a willing “yes” to God’s will, even when it was costly.

From Palms to Passion

Palm Sunday begins with celebration, but it leads us toward the cross. It reminds us that true victory is not found in power or triumph as the world understands it, but in love, sacrifice, and surrender.

The same crowd that welcomed Jesus with palms would later turn away. This challenges us to reflect: Do we follow Jesus only in moments of joy, or also in times of sacrifice?

An Invitation for Holy Week

This week, we are invited to do more than observe—we are called to participate:

  • To reflect daily on the journey of Christ
  • To enter into His suffering with prayer and openness
  • To grow in humility, obedience, and love
  • To allow God to purify our experiences and transform our hearts

As we journey from Monday through Good Friday, may we not remain at the level of remembrance, but move into true encounter. (EV)
