NBVM Novena Day 4: Mary, Mother of Hope

In celebrating the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we are invited to reflect on her special place in God’s beautiful plan of salvation. The Gospels tell us little about Mary’s birth, yet we know one profound truth: Mary came into the world because God willed it so.

Long before time began, God chose Mary to be the mother of His Son, the One through whom our salvation would come. In the stillness of history, God was preparing the light of salvation, and with Mary’s nativity, the final chapter of salvation history began. Through Mary’s humble “yes,” hope entered the world in the person of Jesus Christ, and God’s promise of redemption began to unfold. Her birth reminds us that extraordinary grace can begin in silence and simplicity, through ordinary people and hidden moments.

Lessons from the Birth of Mary

  1. Mary is the Dawn of Hope
Before sunrise, the first soft light breaks the darkness. Mary is that first light. She is the dawn announcing the coming of Christ, the true Sun who brings salvation to the world. Through her, hope begins to shine on a world longing for redemption.
  2. God Prepared Her for Us
From the very beginning, Mary was set apart to bear God’s Son. Through her, God would send Jesus so that we might find our way back to Him. Her birth is part of God’s plan to bring salvation to all of us.
  3. God Works Through the Ordinary
Mary was born to humble parents, Saints Joachim and Anne, simple people chosen to play an important role in God’s plan. Through them, God prepared the one who would change the course of salvation history. He continues to work the same way today, using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.
  4. Mary, Our Model of Faith and Obedience
Mary’s “yes” at the Annunciation was only the beginning. Through joys and sorrows, even at the foot of the Cross, she remained steadfast in prayer and love. Her life is an invitation for us to trust God as she did and to surrender to His will with faith and courage.
  5. Mary Leads Us to Jesus
In giving us Mary, God gave us a mother who draws us closer to His Son. She intercedes for us, comforts us in our struggles, and gently guides us back when we falter. Through Mary, we are led to Jesus, who is our hope and our salvation.

Honouring Mary, Our Mother of Hope

On the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we do more than celebrate Mary’s birth; we honour who she is and what she means to us. Mary was not born for herself; she was born for the world. Her life was one of complete dedication: to God, to her Son, and to each of us.

As we keep Mary in our hearts, let us follow her example of humility, faith, and love. She is our Mother of Hope, always pointing us to Jesus. In her, we find comfort, guidance, and the assurance that God’s promises never fail.

On this feast, let us entrust ourselves to Mary’s care. Where she is, hope is alive, for Jesus is always near. (KA)
