For Nothing is Impossible to God

In Lk 1: 26-38, we see Mary, a young girl looking forward to starting a new life with her betrothed, Joseph, then suddenly her life is altered by the appearance of Angel Gabriel and her call to a higher purpose. In this scene of the annunciation, Mary moves from being disturbed and afraid to being open and trusting to God’s call. She does not know what the future holds for her but her deep faith in God moves her to trust and solely depend on Him. She thus becomes a vessel of God’s love and grace for the entire human race.

How often have we found ourselves in situations where our laid out plans are all upended and we wrestle with God wanting things to go our way? God gave Mary a free will and when she said yes to Him, she experienced a fruitful life. God gives us a free will too when he calls us. What is our response to him? We probably have so many questions for Him as to why our life is not going the way we planned or hoped. It is only human to doubt and be afraid of what the future may be.

Maybe 2020 has thrust us into unchartered waters and all our well laid plans have crumbled. Exams postponed, school life disrupted, celebrations and meeting have gone virtual, job losses, deaths, quarantines, lockdowns and fear of the unknown. May be in the midst of all this fear and struggle, we can look to Mary as a model to show us the way as we thread through these choppy waters.  For nothing is impossible to God, if we cling to his promises, He will bring us through. When we say “yes” to God, we too can be a vessel of His love and grace. – SR
