Priceless: Girls’ Movie Day Touches on Human Dignity

A group of girls and young women spent some quality time together recently watching the movie Priceless. The movie depicted the life of a man who falls on bad times and agrees to transport a box truck on a cross country trip for cash, without asking any questions about the task. He eventually discovers that the box contains two girls who were being trafficked to be prostituted, risks everything to rescue them and from then on leads a life he was meant to live.

After watching the movie, everyone reflected on the theme of human dignity and what it meant. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that human dignity is rooted in man’s creation in the image and likeness of God. It is a gift that God gives to each human person and there is nothing that needs to be done to earn it, nor anything that one can do for it to be taken away. This truth must always be kept in mind and must be reflected in one’s own behaviour and how one treats others.

The human person is made up of body and soul. Looking merely at a person’s body is to objectify the person and not respect their dignity. We are instead called to look at the whole person by also appreciating their mind – by listening to their ideas, thoughts and opinions – and valuing their heart and soul – by caring for and respecting their feelings and emotions. The group was also reminded that we cover and clothe our bodies not because it is bad or due to shame, but rather because it is very good. Just as the most prized possessions are kept hidden under lock and key, the body too is protected as it is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

After the reflection session, the group spent some time making origami hearts and wrote their names on it as a reminder that each one of them is priceless. The event was organized by the working adult group, Call242 and was held on Sunday, 1st September 2019 at SCIC.  (by Kathlin Ambrose)
