Father, Son and Spirit

On the Feast of the Holy Trinity, Fr. Dom began his homily with a short story of three monks who lived in a remote island. The Bishop felt it was his duty to pay them a visit and teach them so me prayers. Upon his visit, he was shocked to know that they did not even know the “Our Father”. So he made it a point to teach them. After some time, he bade them farewell and was on his boat set to sail. The three monks felt they could not remember the prayer began running desperately after the bishop. The Bishop having sailed quite a distance was in disbelief to see the monks run on water. When the monks told him that they had forgotten the prayer, he encouraged them to continue to pray the prayer they have been praying- the monks told the bishop that their prayer was simple: “there are three of you Father, son and spirit and there are three of us, have mercy on us.”

Fr. Dom explained that there are many who tried to explain the Trinity. Some explained the Trinity using the sun. The Sun is seen as the Father, the rays- the son and the heat – the spirit. He explained that the Trinity is a mystery and related the story of St Augustine:  Once St. Augustine was very concerned about his preaching on the Trinity. He was thinking how he was going to explain the Trinity. Then he came across a boy by the beach trying hard to fill a hole with the water from the ocean. He advised the boy and said that what he was trying to do was impossible, “You cannot fill the small hole with the ocean”. In return the boy replied, “you too Augustine, you are trying to fill the little brain of yours with the creator of the universe”.

He said there are many theological revelation of the Trinity – in the Baptism of the Lord, Annunciation and the Ascension.

Fr. Dom said, while we can try to immerse ourselves into understanding this mystery,  what is more important is the personal experience of the Trinity. He himself has experienced the mercy of the Father as the Father in the prodigal son. He has experienced Christ as the redeemer looking at his cross and suffering. The promptings of the spirit has always enabled the words to flow during his preaching. It is the personal experience of the Trinity that will help us to persevere in our faith.

Father’s Day Celebration and Blessing.

Fr. Dom blessed the Fathers and said that they are witnesses to the young men.  Their joy and faithfulness will influence the young men to walk in faithfulness.
