Easter Reflection

Fr. Dom in his homily explained that stories are important to our lives – they make life meaningful. He quoted the words of Gandhi’ “When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall.

On Easter vigil, Fr. Dom explained that there are many stories: the first reading was on the story of creation- God created man in His image and likeness. Man sinned but God loved them so much that he saved them. The 2nd Reading was of the Passover- another story of God saving the Israelites while the 3rd Reading in Ezekiel God takes care of them- “Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.”.

He then asked the congregation, “as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, what is your story? What is Easter for you? “

Some responded that Easter represents new life, salvation and risen Christ and time for self-reflection and renewal. A little girl without hesitation said “Christ has risen”. Others also responded that it was a celebration of Joy, miracle of God’s love for all of us and dying to self-pride.

Fr. Dom explained that the women went to the tomb first and having experienced an empty tomb, they told the story to other disciples. Peter and others went running to the tomb saw the linen and were amazed. Having experienced the Easter Joy- we cannot keep it to ourselves. We need to share it for the church to be active.

During the multi-lingual Easter Vigil mass, Fr. Louis explained the important elements of Easter-

  • Service of Light.- fire represents new life
  • The Liturgy of the Word – the stories of creation and salvation are the greatest love story ever
  • Christian Initiation and the Renewal of Baptismal Vows- water that refreshes and cleanses us
  • Eucharist- communion of body and Christ to strengthen us to continue with our commitment

Fr. Louis explained that because of Easter we have freedom from all sins and despair – a peaceful night.

Placing of flowers at the foot of the cross

Fr. Dom asked the congregation to place a flower at the foot of the cross where they had placed the stones on Good Friday. He said ” if you truly feel that the Lord liberates you from the pain and struggles, place a flower at the foot of the cross”.
