Fire Drill for Catechism Children of NBVM/SCIC

A fire drill for the three-language catechism groups of the Church of The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was carried out on Sunday, 24 August 2025.

The objective was to ensure that catechism teachers and children know what to do in the event of an emergency, such as a fire outbreak at the Nativity Centre.

One week prior to the drill, the Safety Ministry Chairman briefed the catechism teachers, who then explained the procedures to the children. The instructions given were:

  1. Stop immediately whatever they are doing.
  2. Proceed to the nearest exit as indicated by the “KELUAR” sign.
  3. Follow the escape route as explained.
  4. Do not run or push—walk calmly and quickly.
  5. Go to the Safe Assembly Area, which is located at the open space just outside the Sacristy.
  6. Respond “Present!” when their names are called during the roll call.

Schedule of the Fire Drill Exercises:

  1. Tamil catechism children – 9:15 a.m. (Postponed due to light rain)
  2. Mandarin catechism children – 10:15 a.m.
  3. English catechism children – 11:05 a.m.

When the fire alarm rang, the teachers and children proceeded in an orderly manner to the Safe Assembly Area. A safety briefing was then given by the Safety Ministry Chairman. The children appeared to enjoy the activity and participated well.

In conclusion, the fire drill exercises were carried out smoothly and successfully. (Paul Low)
