The Crib and Meaning of Christmas
During the Christmas Eve homily, Fr. Dom said that the crib clearly explains the meaning of Christmas. First, the star is a sign of ‘great light’ –“ The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone” (Isa 9:2). Thus the star symbolizes the light that we should follow and allow the darkness within to be dispelled.
Second, the crib with all its imperfections has the Holy Family that receives the birth of child Jesus; this tells us that life is not perfect. Life is fusion of joy and sorrow.
Third, Jesus is the reason for the season. Without Jesus, there would not be a Christmas. So let us not forget Jesus during this celebration.
Lastly, the shepherds were witnesses of the greatest miracle -God became man. They witnessed a God who came humbly to save mankind. God chose ordinary people like the shepherds who led simple lives and were open to God’s message. We too are to be like the shepherds – open to God’s message and be His witness to the world.
