NBVM Novena Day 7: Peace in Times of Suffering
In times of suffering, it is natural to seek relief, answers, or justice. Yet today’s readings remind us that true peace is not found in controlling our circumstances but in allowing God’s love to guide our hearts. St. Paul teaches that while knowledge may make us feel strong, it is love that truly builds up and strengthens others. Even amid pain and hardship, we are called to look beyond ourselves and act with compassion, recognizing that our choices can bring encouragement and hope to those who are struggling alongside us.
The Gospel presents an even greater challenge. Jesus calls His disciples to love their enemies, pray for those who mistreat them, and respond to hurt with mercy rather than retaliation. Such a response may seem impossible when we are suffering, yet it is precisely through forgiveness and trust in God that inner peace begins to take root. The peace Christ offers is not the absence of trials but the strength to face them without allowing bitterness, anger, or resentment to take hold of our hearts.
As we reflect on these readings, we are invited to place our wounds, worries, and burdens before the Lord who knows us completely. In moments of suffering, God remains close to us, guiding us along the everlasting way. When we choose love over hatred, mercy over judgment, and trust over fear, we discover a peace that the world cannot give—a peace that comes from knowing that Christ walks with us through every trial and leads us toward hope and new life.
