Love is not an Investment!

Love is not an investment! It is a gift. Investment focuses on returns but love gives without measure. As St. Rose of Lima explains, “love is difficult but it is our essence. It is what lifts us above all other creatures”.

In ‘The Four Loves’, C. S Lewis, writes that love is no safe investment and to love is to be vulnerable. “Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken.”

Alternatively, you can keep your heart intact by giving your heart away to no one and “wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness” whereby your heart becomes impenetrable. C.S. Lewis adds that Hell is the only place without love.

We do not want hell nor can we escape love because Jesus tells us in this week’s Gospel (Jn15: 9-17), “You did not choose me, no, I chose you”. He call us friends and tells us that he loves us. We are not investments to him; He laid down his life for us.

Now, Jesus gives us the path to happiness in this world having won victory over sin and death; He tells us to imitate him- keep his commandments and to love as He did.  He does not expect us to do it on our own effort but through His grace that He pours down unto us as long as we remain friends with Him. We are to be His channel of love. Whatever we choose to do in our lives, our primary mission is to love as He did. – SR
