Be Like Mary

“Home is where the Mother is” said Fr. Dom. He told the story of a little girl who was taken from the streets by mother Theresa and provided food and care. Despite being given everything good, the little girl kept running away from the shelter. Upon following her, she was found in the streets again with a poor woman scavenging for food. The woman was the little girl’s mother. No matter how much comfort was given, what was more precious to the little girl was the love and bond of her mother- that was her home.

“Be like Mary” advised Fr. Dom. Mary was a woman who pondered things in her heart. She was not rash or hasty to do things. She contemplated on things and allowed the spirit to guide her.  She was also a woman of blessing. Fr. Dom also said stop being a source of negativity to the people around us. Instead of complaining and pointing out faults- be a blessing and a source of kindness and gentleness like Mary. Mary was also a woman of courage. Though young, she stood firm on the promises of God and followed His will. She did not allow anxiety or fear to rule her life but rather faith to move her forward.

Mary, model of patience

Mary, model of blessings

Mary, model of courage

On the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, may we follow this woman who was contemplative, courageous and a blessing to all.  We do not know what the future holds but if we take each day to grow to be a person like Mary, we can be assured that we too will become a blessing to those around us.

Happy New Year and may 2021 be a year we choose to be a blessing to others.
