A Call to Serve

On August 25th , Saturday morning, the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu took time to meet with the altar servers of the church and prodded them to ponder on their call to serve the Lord.

He began with the reading 1 Samuel 3: 1-10 and explained the call of Samuel. He urged the servers to reflect on what God is calling them to do. Like Samuel, their response should be “speak Lord your servant is listening”.

He also shared with them the life of St. John Berchman, the patron saint of altar servers. His life of devotion to prayer and desire to become a Jesuit priest motivated him to carry out his ordinary duties with perseverance and perfection. However, he died at an early age before becoming a priest.   His feast day is on 26th of November.

Fr. Dominic, then, broke them into several groups to discuss and share the following questions:

Why did you become an altar server?

Have you experienced God?

What is your plan for the year?

For the servers, who had not known the story of St. John, Fr. Dominic’s sharing enabled them to see that being an altar server was a call to serve in perfection. For others, it was a time for reflection.

There were also many fun activities planned for the servers to get to know one another and work as a team.
