The True Gift of Christmas
As we celebrate Christmas today, we’re reminded of the profound message in the opening verses of the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This is the theology that underpins our Christmas joy. As Fr Dominic beautifully shared in his homily, Christmas is not just a moment in time, but a reminder that we have seen God’s glory in the person of Jesus Christ, the only Son of the Father.
For many, Christmas is a busy time filled with preparations – decorating, organising plans. But beyond the hustle and bustle, what does Christmas mean to you? Fr Dominic invited us to reflect on this question, and many of our parishioners shared their thoughts:
- “It’s about Christ living in me,” said one.
- “A reminder to strengthen my relationship with Jesus,” shared another.
- Others spoke of joy, hope, and togetherness, the spirit of Christmas that brings families and communities closer.
When we ask, “What is God’s gift to us?” the answer is clear: God gave us Jesus, His Son, born into the world to save us. We also asked ourselves what gifts we might want to offer God this Christmas, or what we are thankful for. Many spoke of personal gifts they hold dear:
- “The gift of my family.”
- “The gift of faith and trust.”
- “The gift of my spouse and children.”
Fr Dominic also reminded us of the gift of vocation – his own calling to the priesthood, which he is deeply grateful for. As we reflect on these gifts, we are reminded to thank God and praise Him for the many blessings in our lives.
But what about our gift to God? Do we give Him the gifts He deserves? Fr Dominic encouraged us to not only offer physical gifts, but also to be mindful of our actions. For instance, after Mass, let us not leave behind waste or trash in the church. Instead, let us leave behind kindness, words of affirmation and love. “Let us give the best gift to one another,” he said, urging us to offer our kindness, gratitude, and the very best of ourselves as we celebrate this holy season.
And what could be a better gift than the gift of our NBVM/SCIC parish community? As we gather in prayer and fellowship, we are reminded that we are a living, breathing part of something far greater than ourselves. Our parish community is a true gift — a place of love, support and shared faith. It is here, in this vibrant and welcoming community, that we truly experience the presence of Christ.
This Christmas, let’s take time to reflect on the true meaning of the season – not just the presents under the tree, but the presence of Christ in our lives. Let us rejoice in His gift to us, and in turn, offer the best of ourselves to God and to one another.
Merry Christmas to all, and may God bless you with peace, joy and hope this season.
