NBVM Novena Day 1: Unity and Communion Founded on the Cross

“The cross is the foundation of our unity and communion” said Fr. George Vaithiyanathan during his homily on the 1st Day of the NBVM Feast Day celebration. No human wisdom nor power can unite and enable communion unless God allows it. The cross which may seem foolish in the eyes of the world, conversely holds the wisdom and power to heal and unite.

In the first reading  (1 Cor 1: 17-25), St Paul tells us that the world abhors the cross and ridicules it because they do not know the truth. We on the other hand know the truth and thus recognize the wisdom and power of the cross. In a world torn apart by discord and rivalry, only the cross has the power to heal and unite. The Psalmist reiterates that the folly of God is wiser than man’s wisdom and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength- our God is perfect in His love and wisdom.

The Gospel reading (Mat 25: 1-13) tell us that like the wise bridesmaids we too need to be vigilant and be prepared to be called as witnesses of God’s love in this world. We must first unite ourselves to Christ and be in communion with Him to experience unity and communion with each other. We are not slumber and be complacent in our faith instead be attentive to God’s call.

Fr. George, then asked the congregation to recap a moment when they had been the cause of discord or disunity in the family or community and lift up that moment up to God for healing.

Plenary indulgence was granted to Fr. George for the faithful who attended the mass as it was his first mass after ordination at NBVM. The requirement for the plenary indulgence is sacramental confession, communion (attending the mass) and praying for the Holy Father’s intention.
