A Call to Trust and Serve Like Mary

On the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fr. Dom shared insights into two remarkable traits of Mary, drawn from Scripture, that we are called to emulate in our own lives.

First, he spoke of Mary’s deep faith and humility. When the angel Gabriel announced that she would conceive and bear the Son of God, Mary’s response was one of complete trust: “I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38). Unlike others in the Bible who struggled with disbelief—Sarah laughed when told she would have a child in her old age, and Zechariah doubted when he learned of John the Baptist’s conception—Mary embraced God’s plan without hesitation. Her faith was steadfast, and she submitted herself fully to God’s will, showing us the power of trusting in God’s promises.

Second, Fr. Dom highlighted Mary’s readiness to serve others. After hearing that her cousin Elizabeth was also expecting a child, Mary “got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea” (Luke 1:39). She stayed with Elizabeth for three months, providing support and companionship during a crucial time. This act of service reflects Mary’s character as a woman of action. She didn’t just receive God’s word; she lived it out through her actions, demonstrating that true faith naturally leads to selfless service.

As we reflect on Mary’s Assumption, we are reminded of her profound faith and her willingness to act. Her life teaches us that believing in God’s word and being ready to serve are inseparable. We are called not only to trust in God’s plan for us but also to put our faith into action by helping others in their time of need, just as Mary did.
