Evil may have its hour, but God will have His Day

This week, we are reminded by Jesus through the Parable of the Weeds ( Mat 13: 24-43) not to be hasty in judging and condemning but rather through patience defeat evil.

As Fulton Sheen said, “Evil may have its hour, but God will have His Day”, good will always triumph. God patiently prunes us and leads us home.

The sower is God who sows good seeds (wheat) but the evil one (Devil) comes to feed on the good seeds by sowing a poisonous weed – darnel (evil seeds). The darnel is the evil twin of the wheat- it looks like the wheat lush and green and it difficult to differentiate when it is growing. It can only be differentiated when it has matured. In small doses, one can get ‘drunk’ but in  large doses in can kill. Evil always disguises itself as good and does not pose danger until it is too late.

Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one–the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts,…Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape.”

― C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

Fr. Dom in his homily explained that there is always the tension of evil and good in men. We have both goodness ( from God)  and evil (from the world ) within us. The struggle is ongoing and we may not be able to defeat it immediately but it takes time through maturity to know and identify evil. He said it is easy to judge others for their errors but harder to judge ourselves. We need to nurture the good seeds within us and patiently weed out the ‘darnel’ as we mature in our faith and relationship with God.
