God Works in a Mysterious and Quiet Way
God works in a mysterious and quiet way but steadily and surely. We may not see what is happening, but He is working silently from within. It requires faith and patience to see God’s plan and action. William Cowper a British poet wrote the following poem after his failed suicide attempt and produced many hymns working closely with John Newton.
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm
Deep in unsearchable mines
Of never-failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sovereign will
Just like the man who scatters the seed (Mark 4: 26-34), cannot see the seeds germinating in the ground, we too may not see God working within us and in others from within. He is skillful at what He does, so do not fear. When dark clouds gather and we cannot make sense of the difficulties we are going through, hang on! If we are patient enough, we will be able to taste the “sweet flower”!
His purposes will ripen fast
Unfolding every hour
The bud may have a bitter taste
But sweet will be the flower
