The Chosen: A TV show about Jesus you don’t want to miss
There is a new TV show about the life of Jesus that is making big waves all over the world. And what’s even better is that anyone can watch it for free from any part of the world as long as they have internet connection.
The Chosen is a beautifully made series about the life of Jesus seen through the eyes of those who knew him. One would see all the familiar names from the Gospels – Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John, Mary Magdalene, Nicodemus and many more – brought to life in each episode. Over the eight episodes in season 1, viewers are treated to wonderfully shot scenes showing the miracle of the fish, the healing of the leper and paralytic, the changing of water into wine at Cana, the healing of Mary Magdalene from demonic possession, and the encounter with the woman at the well.
While watching these familiar stories, viewers also get a taste of how life was in Israel during the time of Jesus. We get to see the suffering of the people under Roman oppression and the role of the Pharisees in Jewish society. We also understand how much tax collectors were despised by the people and catch a glimpse of the Jewish wedding ceremony and how important wine is in the celebrations. The development of these stories and characters, while not necessarily historically accurate truly helps the viewer put into context the stories we have read in the Gospels. They bring to life the Gospel passages and help us, who are so far removed from the culture and customs of the Jewish people to understand the significance of Jesus’ words and actions more than 2,000 years ago.
In The Chosen, we see Jesus as a dear friend. One whom we would not hesitate to surrender our lives to. He laughs, jokes and teases, cares, and loves in a big way everyone whom he encounters. He is endearing, gentle and compassionate yet firm in speaking truth. This depiction of Jesus opens our imagination to the kind of person Jesus must have been for Peter, Andrew, James, and John to drop whatever it was they were doing to follow him. Through these scenes, we share the excitement the disciples felt when they encountered Jesus and answered his call.
The makers of The Chosen have truly done an amazing job in creating a TV series that is absolutely captivating. It would not be too far-fetched to say that this is the best TV show about Jesus to have been made so far. The brilliant storytelling opens the mind in a fresh way about an old and familiar story. Above all, The Chosen entices the viewer to grow deeper into a personal relationship with Jesus and encourages one to pick up the Bible and once again read the Gospels, meditate on the life of Jesus, and love him even more. In the words of Jonathan Roumie who plays Jesus, “…it has made me more compassionate, more open, more ecumenical, and more appreciative of our faith and the sacrifice of the Mass even more. Learning about Christ in the context in which he came, his culture and his time… it’s broadened my knowledge and opened my heart.”
