Greed & Fruitless

In his homily, on 22 March during the Friday Mass, Fr. Dom focused on the Gospel of Mat 21: 33-43, 45-46 and emphasized on two points: one on greed and being  fruitless and the other generous and fruitful.

He explained that when we have greed in our hearts, we desire to have more and more. Our hunger for more is never satiated. “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘this is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance’” (Mat 1: 38).  We become unkind and uncharitable. We hold back what we can share with others. Thus we become fruitless “I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to people who will produce its fruit” (Mat21:43).

He showed the map of the Jordan River that flows both into the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. The Sea of Galilee has an outlet, it flows out and is alive and teeming with fish while the Dead Sea is enclosed and has no outlet. It is salty and has no living creature.

Thus, when we are generous, God gives us the grace to bear more fruits like the Sea of Galilee.

The choice is ours- to be generous and bear fruit or be greedy and be fruitless.  He said greed is problem from within and not an external issue and quoted Andy Stanley- “greed is not a financial issue. It is a heart issue”.
