Day 5: Listen to the Spirit

Homily

Fr. Louis began his sermon with the following story:

Once a Muslim Professor challenged a Catholic Professor on faith in a class. The Muslim professor said that it is written in Lk 6: 29 that “if someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also” and so the Muslim professor slapped the Catholic professor. In response, the Catholic professor turned the other cheek. He pushed a little further and added that “if someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them” and so the catholic professor was stripped of his clothes. Although the Muslim professor thought that he had succeeded in showing the Catholic professor as subservient, the audience consisting of Muslim students were moved by the silent resistance of the professor and strength in his faith that they apologized to the Catholic professor.

Fr. Louis said that no one can judge God’s ways, what may seem foolish may be the way of the truth referring to the first reading 1 Cor 2: 10-16 “As the scripture says: Who can know the mind of the Lord, so who can teach him? But we are those who have the mind of Christ.”

He further added that all of us have received gifts from God and are called to be ministers in our mission. He gently cautioned the congregation that if they do not use their gifts, God will take it back. “Do we have a mind of Christ?” he asked. He explained that Jesus will reveal to us our ministry if we ask him.

He then gave an example of the Legion of Mary – soldiers of God. Mary’s role was to point us to Jesus. Mary’s attributes of caring, loving and always pondering in heart shows us that we need to listen to the spirit because “the depths of God can only be known by the Spirit of God”. Our duty too is to know the will of God and bring people closer to Him.

Blessing of the Ministers

Both Fr. Louis and Fr. Dom prayed and blessed them.
